The iPod is changing the way we listen to music. This is because of the massive capacity that allows you to put all your music in it and the high quality of the sound. The iPod is even changing the way we listen to music in the car. One advantage of using an iPod in the car is that you do not need to replace your old stereo system. You can listen to your iPod simply by connecting your iPod to the car stereo through an adapter. The popularity of iPods has led to the manufacture of many add-ons that allow you to connect it to the stereo. These add-ons are by manufacturers who want to capitalize on the popularity of iPods and by stereo manufacturers who do not want drivers to replace their stereos.

Another reason there are so many customized adapters and other add-ons that are able to do impressive things is the fact that iPod is standardized, meaning there are only a few types/models of iPod. This makes it possible for manufacturers to make these add-ons without fear of the models being replaced.

One of the most common accessories for use with iPods is the docking adaptor. This accessory facilitates the sending of audio from the iPod to the FM stereo. It does this through a tiny FM transmitter. Some mobile docking systems have features such as the ability to program the frequency to which the FM transmitter is to be tuned into an iPod, meaning you select the station to listen to just like you would select a song. You can get docking systems that have digital display of the frequency and you can get a docking system that allows you to synchronize the iPod with iTunes. However, the quality is not as good as it would be on headphones since the frequency response is less and the noise is greater due to extra processing.

An important iPod car accessory is the power adapter or charger. This allows the iPod to function without relying on the battery, thereby giving you cost savings. The power adapter/charger is plugged on the cigarette lighter or the power jack. There is a short cable that connects the charger to the iPod. You should consider buying a car mount for your iPod. This should be determined by the model of your iPod. This gives you a convenient place where you can mount the iPod while driving. The mount is placed on the dashboard or the windshield where you can easily reach it. Some of the mounts such as Pro.Fit miMount are bolted into place while others such as the Griffin iSqueez are more portable.

Another accessory used with iPods is an auxiliary input adapter. This is important because some cars do not have an auxiliary input, only an input for a CD changer on the rear panel. With such an adapter, you can even use CD buttons to change tracks on the iPod and to charge it. When choosing between different accessories, consider your preference, the cost, the warranty, and the quality.
